For the goulash using a skillet or dutch oven place over medium heat and melt butter. Stir in paprika and caraway seeds and cook for 2 more minutes. Transfer the onions to a plate and set aside.
In a big pot like a dutch oven add vegetable oil or lard the traditional way and heated up on medium heat. Add the garlic and cook stirring constantly for 2 minutes. Lightly spray a large saucepan with oil and heat over medium high heat.
